Update: 7/5 6:00pm - We have been communicating with Vivian’s owner since this morning, trying our best to help with advice and support and also advising those who on several other posts inquired as to how they may help.
It is with great sadness that we report that we have just learned that Vivian was found, but had passed away. Please keep this family in your thoughts as they navigate through this solemn time.
Incidents like this one are some of the hardest things with which we do as an ACO, as the minute we connect with owners and begin to help them, our hearts melt right into the situation as we know the uncertainties and possibilities when a pet goes missing. Please spend a little extra time snuggling with your pets tonight. 💔
…….
We have been advised that a dog that was attending a local parade with its owner about an hour or so ago, became spooked and ran away from the parade. *We were just advised that this incident may have been reported to us slightly differently and that the dog may have ran away from the Needham fireworks last night, not from this morning's Needham parade.
While we will certainly keep in tune with any leads as to where this dog may be hiding, and hope that it is found safely, please...as Fourth of July celebrations continue throughout the day today, tonight and into the rest of the weekend, leave your dogs home, secured and away from parades, fireworks and other festivities.
Please consider this our Holiday Week Advisory #5.
Crowds, children, band music, lights, sirens, microphones, fireworks and numerous other sorts of celebration novelties, including bang pops/party snappers, can be extremely frightening and stressful for a dog. Add the extreme weather component-air and pavement temperatures and this is a recipe that can easily lead to tragedy.
Animal Control Officers receive more reports of missing dogs during the Fourth of July holiday than any other time throughout the year, and most of these incidents are preventable.
If anyone should spot 'Vivian', a #60 Black Lab mix, wearing a purple, pink and blue harness (or any dog for that matter), please notify Animal Control or the Police right away. For this particular dog, please contact Needham, Dedham, Newton or Dover as owner information is at hand.
🐾Do not post sightings on social media, as a flood of well intentioned people to the area can delay capture and/or can cause a dog to bolt from that area. Contact Animal Control, Police or Missing Dogs Massachusetts.
🐾Do not chase the dog. Even the friendliest dogs can react very differently once stressed, scared, lost, and overheated.
🐾Sit on the ground and gently and soft-spokenly try to encourage the dog to come to you.
🐾Do not call out to the dog by it's name if you should spot it, as this can be a trigger to further run and evade if others have tried to capture it by calling out to it by name.
🐾If you happen to have access to a treat, high value food item and/or even a (filled) dog bowl that the dog may recognize as water, please put it near to you, respectfully distanced, in an effort to lure the dog to you in a trusting manner of which the dog should determine.
🐾Pursuing the dog may only cause it to continue to run and behave evasively.
