Dear Collier County residents and visitors,

As I have affirmed through my oath of office and in my personal convictions, I fervently support the United States Constitution and all amendments. Over the past few days an important decision was made by Florida’s First District Court of Appeals involving the Second Amendment. During the time since, our legal team has been thoroughly analyzing the potential impact that decision will have on you and your Collier County deputies and just yesterday, the Florida Attorney General issued a guidance memorandum to all Florida law enforcement agencies and prosecuting authorities.

I can now assure you that the Collier County Sheriff's Office will not pursue criminal charges against law abiding citizens who openly carry fi****ms in allowable public areas. We have issued guidance to our deputies on this decision and will continue to review and update our policies and procedures as further direction is provided by the judiciary, legislature, or executive branches of government.

It is important for citizens to know that private property owners maintain the right to prohibit open carry on their premises, and we encourage everyone to respect those rights and understand the law as it applies in those circumstances. Also, having a firearm remains prohibited in the “sensitive” areas that existing enforceable Florida laws cover such as schools, etc. Laws remain enforceable regarding reckless display of fi****ms and failure to properly secure fi****ms, especially where minors can gain access.
