70% of salespeople struggle with depression. Compare that to other careers and the range is 15-30%. Why the drastic difference?
High achieving sales people have always believed their results = their value.
If they work harder, their results will be better, and their value will rise.
They inherently are competitive, push themselves & want to be challenged.
Unlike other careers though, they start over from 0…
- every month
- every year
It’s a constant reminder: “prove your value”
It can be exhilarating.
Sometimes though, it leads to questioning your true value as a human being.
It took losing my job in 2013 to force me to face that my true value wasn’t associated with my title, or results.
During that grueling 6 months of unemployment I started asking myself one question to keep depression at bay:
“Have you done all you can do to leave each person better than you found them today?”
Because I couldnt control…
- if I got an interview call
- if I got an offer
But I could control how I treated people.
And sometimes the only way out of depression is to stop thinking about yourself and to help someone else.
One day that simply meant stopping to talk to the old man walking his dog and asking how he was doing.
I didn’t have energy for much…but getting out of my own head helped.
Tying your value to things that die when you do, will never serve you.
So if you find yourself down & self critical, remember that you’re so much more than a title that you hold or the dollars you bring in.

I entered college as an Art major. In my first semester my professor ranted saying "no one makes any money in the Arts unless you teach." As a naive 18 year old, I believed her, then changed my major.
I closed out that semester by putting all my art supplies in my massive folder and never opened it again.
..until I had to throw it away because it got destroyed in my garage after one too many Midwest winters.
When my studies shifted from Art to Business Management, I was deflated but excited.
As I was wrapping up my degree a few years later I asked myself...
"what if I married the two?"
So, I did.
2 years after graduating I started Mango Tree Photography.
9 years after graduating I started AKA Communications.
11 years after graduating I started Fox & Goose Studios.
While pulling in a corporate salary I founded businesses surrounding the arts and my creative skills.
The one I'm most proud of though...is where I chose to be a different example than that professor.
Where I showed these two that their ideas can be turned into a book.
A book full of jokes and illustrations.
That they signed for every single customer, even though he could barely hold a pen.
That pairing their artistic talent with business knowledge meant they can reach 13 countries and all 50 United States.
That the limit to what's possible is only created in their mind.
People will coach you on the narratives that they believe to be true for themselves.
It doesn't mean they need to be true for you.
