What if the reason horses and autism click so well together was figured out decades ago, by a little girl the doctors wanted to give up on?
Her name is Temple Grandin. She was born in 1947 and diagnosed with autism when she was tiny; back when almost no one understood it. She didn't speak until she was three and a half. The doctors told her parents there was no hope and that she should be sent away to an institution.
Her mother said absolutely not, and fought to raise her at home with speech therapy, patience, and the belief that her daughter's mind wasn't broken; just different.
And oh, was it different. Temple thinks in pictures instead of words.
She feels the world through her senses turned all the way up; a sudden noise, a flicker of shadow, a coat left hanging on a fence, putting her on high alert and internal anxiety. Things most people never notice hit her like a tsunami.
And here's the part that matters to us: that is EXACTLY how a horse experiences the world too.
That's our why.
Temple spent her whole life proving it. She earned a PhD in animal science and became a professor, and she designed the gentle handling systems that nearly half the cattle in North America move through today โ all because she could look at a scary shadow on the ground and understand why an animal froze, when nobody else could.
She says her autism is the gift that let her see the world the way animals do. Same sensory world. Same details. Same language that lives underneath words.
So when a neurodivergent child who struggles with eye contact and conversation walks up to one of us and just... breathes easier?
That's not a coincidence.
That's two minds meeting in the same place โ a place that doesn't need words, only presence.
Temple Grandin gave the whole world the science behind that moment. We just get to be the fuzzy, 36-inch proof of it.
That's why this is real clinical work, guided by mental health professionals. It's a bridge that was mapped out by one of the most brilliant minds of our time.
We're just honored to be the cutest little bridge in Chicagoland.

P.S. Cocoa would like the record to show that SHE understood all of this immediately, being a deeply intellectual diva. Oreo understood it too, right after someone confirmed there were snacks involved.
