In the summer months, sidewalks and beaches are filled with bicyclists of all ages; however, this wasn't always the case! Although bikes were first invented in 1817, the first bike wasn't brought to Nantucket until 1878. At the time, bicycles were seen only as "fancy riding" for elite athletes. Needless to say, bikes took a while to catch on in Nantucket.

Since then, bikes have been embraced by locals. Now, it seems that you can't take a few steps without seeing a local traveling through Nantucket on two wheels! During your stay in Nantucket, stop by Nantucket Bike Shop or another bike shop to rent a bike or scooter to experience a different side of this charming island.
