Don't ignore your swimming pool just because the kids are out of the house. Swimming is a great way for older Americans to stay fit, and workouts in the pool are gentle on joints.

The first heated swimming pool was built by Gaius Maecenas of Rome in the first century BC. Heat for the pool was obtained from large wood fires in the basement, with columns leading up to the pool helping transfer the heat.
