Before Walt Disney, there was Winsor McCay. We enjoyed the opportunity today to celebrate the Grand Opening of Winsor Place in Spring Lake, Michigan. Built on the site of Winsor McCay’s childhood schoolhouse, Winsor Place is a mixed-use property in the village’s downtown. The property honors Winsor McCay, a pioneer in animation and a famed illustrator. McCay was the forerunner of Walt Disney in terms of American animation. Disney often said that McCay inspired and influenced him as an animator. Well done by the Veneklassen construction development team!
At HDJ, we believe great design can do more than shape buildings but strengthen communities, create opportunities, and improve lives. Winsor Place is a reminder that every site has a story, and thoughtful design can help write its next chapter.

We’re excited to celebrate the groundbreaking of HōM Flats Phase 3, a significant step forward in helping address the growing housing needs in Kent County. Located at the former Studio 28 site in Wyoming, this $84 million expansion will bring 200 new mixed-income housing units, a childcare center, and enhanced community amenities to the region. Supported by state and county funding, the project reflects the importance of thoughtful development, strong partnerships, and continued investment in creating attainable, high-quality workforce housing opportunities across West Michigan.
Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating and supporting the continued growth of the HōM Flats at 28 West community. We’re thrilled to see this next phase come to life and look forward to the positive impact it will have for residents and the surrounding community.
