Parents, one way to help your child with 3rd-5th grade math is to make sure they know their basic multiplication facts (0-9). The 3rd grade standard states that "Students will state automatically all products of two one-digit numbers by the end of third grade." Automaticity is the level of learning you have achieved when you can do something accurately and quickly while you are doing something else. It is “automatic” because you don’t have to stop and think about it; you can do it while concentrating on something else.

Once students know their facts automatically, it helps them so much and prepares them for 4th and 5th grade math. Flashcards or online multiplication games are great ways to drill the facts.
