This is a great little short film to give you and your child or students a little different perspective on what seems to be an everyday struggle.

Happy 4th from Crain Reading Center!
I have noticed I have seen a ton of ads and post lately for "treatments" for dyslexia. I think there has been and will continue to be a huge debate about dyslexia. What it is and what it isn't. What can help and what can't. I think there are a lot of good intention individuals out there wanting to help and that is good, but first and foremost we must know the facts. Fact one: Dyslexia is a neurological defect, a glitch in the wiring when it was first laid down during embryonic development. If you have dyslexia, you have dyslexia. It cannot be cured. You can however be remediated. You can receive proper intervention and in a timely manner to help the effects of having dyslexia, but you will always be dyslexic, and it will rear its ugly head from time to time in areas of your life to remind you. Fact two: Dyslexia is not a sight problem. This is a common misconception. We were told a long time ago by a professional and someone who was well known and trusted in the field of dyslexia, that my son needed glasses. He did not.
Like most parents who have children struggling with anything, we want fast results. We tend to think if we do not see a child who is struggling to read and comprehend not suddenly be able to read and comprehend then the intervention method is not working. This is not necessarily true. All people are different and like most other disabilities there are levels of severity: mild, moderate and sever. Depending on the severity level these students all need a different combination of things. That could be a slower pace, more help with spelling than reading, more help with comprehension.
Many years ago, as my husband and I were feeling our way through trying to help Jackson with his dyslexia, we tried everything. I do not remember the company, but we too tried a place that claimed they could "fix his brain". It was extremely costly and largely unaffected. Jackson did not need to know how to memorize everything, he needed the skills necessary to figure them out. Memorizing does not always equal knowing. There is a place for that, some things are good and helpful to memorize, but what about the things he didn't memorize. He will need to skills necessary to figure those words out or why that word is spelled the way it is.
If you are a parent that has a struggling reader, and you are trying to navigate your way through finding the right help. I understand where you are. We have been there and still are a bit. The reality is there is no quick fixes and anyone who is telling you there are just simply does not know what they are talking about. You are the parent; you know your child best. The good news is that they can be given tools and learn skills that will help navigate life. My son just graduated high school and started a job. It is a difficult job and one that we had a lot of reservations about, but he is doing it. He came to us the other day to ask for help to focus more attention on that is causing him the most trouble in his new due to his dyslexia. So, I will continue to help him in that area to learn to be successful.

Receiving the correct intervention and staying the course is the best chance for success.
I am currently accepting two new students for reading intervention at this time.

Welcome to the Crain Reading Center page. I will be adding more information in the coming weeks to my page. I am excited to make this transition from home educator to private tutor using my personal experiences with my son for the past 18 years, who has dyslexia, as well as education and personal training I have received over the years. I just recently made a move into an actual building for my tutoring services. I am looking forward to servicing my community in reading difficulties and bringing awareness to dyslexia and other reading difficulties.
