The little town of Mt. Airy, North Carolina is home to the “Dairy Center”, one of the area’s favorite old-school drive-ins! You’ll enjoy fresh-pattied burgers, hot dogs, and the famous Surry County ground steak sandwich, all made to order. The banana pudding ice cream, sundaes, and banana splits are local favorites. Inside, you’ll find only six booths, plenty of 1950s-style charm, and walls filled with old photos and memorabilia. Service is fast, friendly, and they know many regulars by name. It’s cash-only, cozy, and loud at times, but the food, sweet tea, and small-town atmosphere make it a must-visit stop.

“The name 'Scarlet Begonias' comes from my favorite Grateful Dead song. When I opened the shop twenty years ago, Mount Airy didn’t have anything like the colorful, funky space I wanted to create — and I’d always hoped to be part of this walkable little downtown. So when this building opened up, I went for it.

What I love most is how the businesses look out for each other. If someone comes in searching for something I don’t have, I’m sending them to a neighbor. If you’ve taken the time to park and walk downtown, I want you to find what you’re looking for.
