A Glimpse into the Past: From New Columbia to Pleasant Plain
This week we highlight a community on the very edge of the Little Miami District. The story of Pleasant Plain begins in 1852 when a man named Samuel Craig laid out the initial layout for a settlement he called New Columbia. Strategically positioned along the Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad line, the small town quickly found its purpose as an essential shipping and transit hub for regional agricultural goods. By 1860, the Ohio Legislature officially changed the community's name to Pleasant Plain, a title that perfectly mirrors the flat, welcoming landscape of Harlan Township.
The town currently boasts multiple businesses including the Plain Folk Café located in the old schoolhouse, McHenry Farm Equipment that has been in business since 1922, Goodwin Farms and Plain Folk General Store in the old W.M. Kenney store on St. Rt. 132, just to name a few.
In 2027 the town will celebrate its 175th anniversary with a celebration on September 10-12 next year. Stay tuned on our page for additional details as they become available.

Our open house is tonight from 6-8 in the Maineville School Building. Come see some of our new displays including some new pictures like this one that we just received today from the mid-80’s of the Maineville School Playground.

Other exhibits tonight will be a display of Morrow flood pictures through the ages, a historic ladies hat collection, posters on the Stubbs Earthworks and the Warren County Serpent Mound.

Hope to see you there!
