Last weekend marked the first birthday for Monologue of Fire by Samuel Ugbechie. Happy Pub Day plus a year! Of our most recent MVP in poetry winner, Adeeko Ibukun says: “Samuel leads in contemporary Nigerian poetry with a burst of songs that are not only genuine and ignited but also illuminate tenderly the many intricate layers of being human. His is an imagination attuned with nature, bearing for us a robust room to reconsider different elements of human emotions he digs through the richness of life’s ordinariness.” Get your hands on this magnificent collection here: https://www.spdbooks.org/Products/9780898234053/monologue-of-fire.aspx?src=NEWR

This weekend marks the first birthday for Annette C. Boehm’s The Apidictor Tapes. Happy one year since pub day! Of this stellar collection, Rebecca Morgan Frank says: “From an elegiac ‘translation’ of the Narwhal, to sharp-witted interrogations of social cues, to poems that interrogate an era of school shootings, drones, and robots, the poems and personae of The Apidictor Tapes range and explode from their beautiful concision. Annette C. Boehm is an extraordinary poet whose imagination and lyrical control are brought in gorgeous tension through crystalline images and vital turns. Each poem in this collection is a surprise, an arrow, an angled truth.” Celebrate with us and pick up your copy here: https://www.spdbooks.org/Products/9780898234060/the-apidictor-tapes.aspx?src=NEWR

“Sophia Liu’s There Is No Happy Ending is a dazzling collection that takes creative and masterful risks in language, revealing the c omplex process of coming to know one’s self intimately in the chaos of a racist and sexist society. Throughout, there is a distinctly authentic voice that remains vulnerable yet resolute as it carries the reader from page to page. Contextualizing contemporary Communist China’s impact on the global community and the individuals descended from it, the chapbook compels readers to negate preconceived notions about the Asian American and femme-identified person via a series of significant narrative reconstructions related to the Chinese Zodiac, Greek mythology, and linear time. Even more exciting, the ekphrastic section is a series of intimate reflections and cultural criticisms that elevate the poignancy of the important photos. If a chapbook is a preview of what we can soon expect from an emerging author—consider me fully invested!”

Revealing the cover for the first of our two upcoming chapbooks, There is No Happy Ending by Sophia Liu!

“In this explosive chapbook, Sophia Liu charts maternal lineage: here is a speaker ‘not killed at infancy’ who comes from ‘women who vivisected love / from lychee seeds,’ who will tell her daughter ‘to trust the world / through an aperture.’ These lyric and visual poems sear not only against the aggression and abrasions of the American dream, but of the Motherland, China; they tell the truth in raw, glinting honesty.
