Today is Medal of Honor Day ❤️

More than 3,500 service members have received our nation’s highest military award, the Medal of Honor.

Only one woman has ever received it.

That woman was Mary Edwards Walker.

Dr. Mary Walker was a surgeon during the American Civil War who refused to sit on the sidelines when soldiers needed care. When she first tried to join the Union Army, she was turned away because she was a woman. Instead of giving up, she volunteered as a surgeon at a temporary hospital in Washington, D.C. until the Army eventually hired her.

She went on to serve with the Army of the Cumberland and the 52nd Ohio Infantry, becoming the first female surgeon in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Walker treated soldiers on the front lines, often crossing enemy territory to care for wounded civilians. During one of those missions, she was captured by Confederate forces, accused of being a spy, and held as a prisoner of war in Richmond, Virginia until she was released in a prisoner exchange.

For her extraordinary dedication to caring for the wounded in and beyond the battlefield, she was awarded the Medal of Honor after the war.

In 1917, her name was removed from the Medal of Honor Roll along with more than 900 others during a review of recipients. But in 1977, her medal was restored, recognizing the significance of her service and sacrifice.

Her story is a powerful reminder of how far we have come.

And also a reminder that we still have work to do to ensure the service and sacrifices of women in uniform are fully seen, honored, and remembered.

Today, on Medal of Honor Day, we remember the heroes who have worn our nation’s uniform and we honor Dr. Mary Walker. A pioneer. A healer. A prisoner of war. And the only woman to ever receive our nation’s highest military honor.
