Luke earned 3rd Place at the Opelika Regional Competition, securing his spot at the National Civics Bee® Alabama State Finals!
For his essay, Luke shared his concerns for pedestrians and cyclists in communities.
"One thing I want to change in my community is how dangerous it is to walk or bike to places. I personally see a lot of people go by me with only like 13 or 14 inches to spare. This makes me scared that I might get hurt, and to support this I have researched and discovered that somewhere between 230 and 250 cyclists are killed in car crashes annually, and somewhere around 7,300 pedestrians are killed. I am worried that it could no longer be safe to walk or bike to different places. I think that if my idea gets approved or is seen then many lives could be saved."
