Poughkeepsie, NY - As the Mid-Hudson Bridge approaches its 100th anniversary in 2030, the importance of rehabilitating its aging infrastructure cannot be overstated.

A critical component of this project is the use of lightweight cellular concrete, to infill the existing viaduct structures which offers significant advantages in enhancing structural support while minimizing disruptions to traffic, particularly during peak travel times.

The flowable nature of this material allows for easy placement in challenging areas without the need for extensive equipment movement, ensuring that traffic flow remains largely uninterrupted. By utilizing a simple 3-inch hose system positioned along core holes in the viaducts, we can efficiently fill each section with cellular concrete, providing the necessary volume with a minimal physical footprint. This approach not only supports the structural integrity of the bridge but also exemplifies how lightweight cellular concrete serves as an optimal solution in complex infrastructure projects, balancing the demands of safety and accessibility for the traveling public.

When safety, longevity, and traffic flow are all top priorities, innovative infrastructure solutions make all the difference.

The I-65 Central Corridor Project is dedicated to enhancing safety and minimizing unplanned closures while significantly extending the lifespan of existing structures. Over the next three years, the project will focus on replacing or rehabilitating at least nine bridges within the corridor.

A key innovation in this project is the use of Cellular Concrete (LCC), which plays a vital role in our approach. By converting several bridges into embankments, we can maintain open lanes without the need for closures. We plan to place approximately 18,000 cubic yards of Class II material beneath the bridge beams, optimizing the structural integrity and durability.

The ease of placement and the minimal footprint of LCC make it the perfect solution for this project, ensuring both efficiency and sustainability as we work to enhance the infrastructure of the I-65 Central Corridor.
