The East African vs. American Mindset to Running: Volume or Quality 07/16/2018

Found this article this morning as I was going through my email. The content hit me like a brick. I had gone out Sunday with a group of friends to do a long run of 12 miles. A few miles into a hot and humid summer morning I realized this run was not going to be fun or comfortable. I ended up running 11 miles instead of 12. Not a huge deal? But what was my goal for the run? 12 easy miles. It wasn’t 12 and it wasn’t easy. So, I missed the point of the run, time on my feet at an easy pace so I would feel recovered enough to do what I need to do this week. I have to continue to remind my self that each run is important and has its purpose.

Back to the article, the focus on miles versus quality I think boils down to the above. What was the goal of the run? “What are you trying to accomplish?” GPS watches have made watching paces and miles almost addictive. During the summer, especially, we have to be careful to stay focused on the purpose and stay within our own abilities and not so much what other people are doing or are what our watches tell us. I can't emphasize the importance of this idea enough. I see it everyday, someone injured during their training cycle. Imbalances, bad shoes and improper training loads for the person's level of fitness can all be a contributing factor. Most often, though, a lack of core and lower body strength is the main culprit.
