Congratulations to Duke’s Grill for 75 years! Come out today and support local business. Great food, music, cars and prices from the 50’s. Did I mention milkshakes?

Today is a sad day for Union County as we mourn the loss of Commissioner Gary Sides. Gary lived a life of service and many will never know how much he gave of himself. Whether it was during his time on the Board of Education or the Board of Commissioners, he served with a passion and intensity that few could ever match.
Before he was elected to the Union County Board of Commissioners, he was my representative on the Board of Education. He was my children’s representative on the Board of Education. During some of the most difficult times our county and our school system ever faced, he fought for us…. He fought for our children.
Thank you Gary. Thanks for your service, your commitment, your resolve, and most of all your friendship.
You will be missed.

FOLLOW THE MONEY.
BIG MONEY IS FLOODING THIS LOCAL ELECTION. ASK YOURSELF WHY.
Brian Helms, Sam Harris, and Melissa Merrell raised a combined total of just $14,484 — mostly from friends, family, and local citizens who live here and care about Union County and believe in their vision.
Their opponent, Patrick Tyson, raised $27,890 — nearly double.
But that’s just the beginning.
His campaign has already sent out two full-page glossy mailers costing nearly $14,000 EACH. That’s almost $28,000 in mail from his campaign alone.
Outside special interest group Carolina Strong has also sent out two more glossy mailers.
That brings the total to at least $56,000 spent on mailers alone.
That doesn’t include TV ads.
That doesn’t include digital ads.
That doesn’t include smear campaigns.
And there are still days left to spend more.
Let that sink in:
The entire amount raised by Helms, Harris, and Merrell combined would barely cover ONE of these massive mail campaigns.
So here are the real questions voters deserve answered:
Why are homebuilders and special interests pouring this kind of money into one local county commissioner race?
Why are outside groups spending massive sums to attack Helms and Merrell?
Why hasn’t Tyson publicly denounced the false and misleading attacks being done in his name?
And most importantly — what are these donors expecting in return?
This isn’t normal.
This isn’t grassroots.
This is big money trying to buy influence in Union County.
When special interests invest this heavily, they expect a return.
Union County government should belong to its citizens — not to developers, not to special interests, and not to whoever writes the biggest checks.
On Election Day, you decide who Union County belongs to. Vote Helms, Harris, Merrell.
