The Weight of Light
Mobile Bay, 2022

We returned from Okinawa to Mobile at the end of 2021. One evening, we crossed the bay just to watch the sunset. The water was calm, the sky quiet—and for a moment, everything slowed down.

I took a few shots, but this one stayed with me.
A quiet echo of transition. A stillness I didn’t know I needed.

Fuji-San dominates the skyline in and around Tokyo. This picture was taken during the colder months when we lived on mainland Japan, back in 2010 and 2011. Fuji-San is an extremely imposing icon. Snow-covered slopes appear to cascade down in smooth, soft layers, with dark shadows and cracks that add depth and texture to the volcanic ridges. The dense, bare trees that contrast against the pale, snow-laden mountain, gives a sense of scale and distance. The sky is overcast with a grainy, muted tone, enhancing the sense of solitude and grandeur. This scene gives a feeling that Fuji-San is serene, yet powerful, Fuji-San is a reminder of the Japanese people’s traditions, peace and cultural timelessness.
