An honor to host Vice Admiral Joseph F. Cahill at our West Coast facility yesterday!

VADM Cahill visited with the specialists and technicians performing ship maintenance on USS Oakland - LCS 24 inside our Dry Dock Independence. This is the first ship to enter the newly-certified dry dock.

By performing this essential $10.8M maintenance in San Diego rather than pierside, we are not only returning the ship to the fleet faster, but also allowing the crew to stay in their homeport near their families.

We are proud to support our Navy and the San Diego maritime community!

Honoring 2,000 Years of Naval Tradition

Today, we witnessed a powerful moment as Austal USA and the crew of future USNS Lansing (EPF 16) welded the mast box into the ship's mast, a tradition that connects us to sailors across millennia. Inside our ship's mast box, we've sealed commemorative coins and personal mementos honoring our ship's legacy.

This tradition dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, where coins were placed beneath masts as "Charon's toll", ensuring safe passage for sailors. Today, though our ships are steel and aluminum and our masts house advanced sensors, we continue this sacred ritual.

The box is now welded into our mast structure, where it will remain sealed until decommissioning, a time capsule connecting past, present, and future generations of sailors.

Design. Build. Maintain. Connect.

These are the core pillars that were the focus of the SSI World Shipbuilding Conference 2026 held in Biloxi, MS, last week. During the conference, Austal USA engineers and IT specialists collaborated with other shipbuilding industry enthusiasts from across the US exploring the future of shipbuilding through thoughtful discussions, hands-on workshops, and innovative demonstrations.

Austal’s own Margaret Palmieri, Chief Information Technology Officer, delivered an insightful keynote on the 'Journey to a Digital Shipyard' and Steve Mackintosh, VP Engineering, contributed to a vital panel discussion on the current state and future of the shipbuilding industry.

Thanks to the SSI team for bringing us all together for this important industry event.

Together, we are driving the industry forward!
