Detention is not a choice. Families seeking asylum are exercising a legal right, yet they are placed into confinement within a system that limits their options and separates them from support. No amount of classrooms, toys, or basic services can justify the detention of children.

Raymondville, Texas — A handwritten letter smuggled out of the El Valle Detention Center offers a harrowing glimpse into daily life for detained women, raising urgent concerns about living conditions, medical care, and human dignity.
The letter’s author, Hilda Torres, is more than a detainee she is a caregiver, a mother figure, and the primary support system for a vulnerable family.
This is the reality for our people. We must shut down these detention centers!
