CSA Design Turns “Dots” into “Ghostly Gummies” for Halloween
Here at CSA Design, we love Halloween, candy, and design, but noticed a lack of interesting package design across the mass produced Halloween candy available for the season—so we decided to create our own to illustrate how art and design can transform a product.

The classic candy "Dots" was chosen as the base, and our CSA Images collection was utilized to illustrate how good design can bring a category of packaging back from the dead.

Our goal is to reinvent product categories using art, humor, and the value of good design, all of which are often missing in many of the safe, copycat, premeditated, anything but interesting packaging categories that exist today.

The real test for this package will happen on the evening of October 31st with our focus groups made up of hundreds of trick or treaters.

The sleeves were printed two sides on uncoated paper by our longtime friends at Franklin Press in Minneapolis. They used their new state-of-the-art 8 color digital press to produce vibrant colors that match the images on screen, and are far brighter than could ever be achieved with standard four color process offset printing.

Self published in an extremely limited print run in 1997, the CSA portfolio book sets function as time capsules, and include work from the first 8 years of CSA Design (established in 1989.) Each portfolio consists of a boxed set containing two 68 page embossed, hard cover, full color, books and a 32 page saddle stitched brochure printed on French Butcher paper. All three of these publications are hand wrapped together in a paper sleeve, and inserted into a cardboard slip case. The book sets include examples of design projects for clients including Urban Outfitters, Target, fossil, MCAD, French Paper, Ralph Lauren, Hatch Show Print, Pantone, AIGA, CSA Archive, El Paso Chile Company, Nissan, Turner Classic Movies, Paramount Pictures, Nike, and more. The CSA Portfolio book set is vintage-yet in unread condition. Books are available only while supplies last.
