Have you seen the news? Native Governance Center and the newly opened Roosevelt Presidential Library are partners!

This year, NGC is partnering to convene Indigenous leaders, facilitators, and institutional partners in a multi-faze process to co-create a future symposium and a long-term engagement framework. Guided by principles such as honoring sovereignty, centering Indigeneity, practicing humility, and prioritizing cultural safety, the process emphasizes listening, trust-building, and shared learning. This project has been a powerful example of how Tribal partnerships can exist, rooted in respect, reciprocity, and healing.

We have facilitated meetings across North Dakota, connecting with incredible Native changemakers, including state representatives, Tribal college leaders, organizers, and more, taking time out of their busy schedules to connect and collaborate. During meetings, we stay in Tribally owned lodging, using Tribal caterers, and Tribal venues as much as possible. Many thanks to the Native nations we have visited, relationships nourished, and discussions shared. We're so grateful for the opportunity to engage in this kind of partnership.

The library officially opened its doors last week, but its work with Tribal leaders started back in 2020. In 2022, an on-site land blessing and an opening prayer were held before construction began, bringing together tribal leaders and Roosevelt descendants for a generational conversation. The building itself is committed to sustainability, uplifts the natural beauty of the badlands, works with an Indigenous chef, has garden space, and much more. These choices reflect a thoughtful approach that honors culture, land, and community. We look forward to our continued partnership!

This June, our team took an intentional break in beautiful Montana, staying on Flathead Lake in lodging owned by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT). This was a chance for our team to nurture relationships and balance so that we're ready to continue strengthening sovereignty and the Native nation rebuilding movement.

Together, we visited the Three Chiefs Cultural Center, where we toured the facility and learned about the land's history and the tribes who call it home. After the tour, the staff was led in a beading activity, each designing and crafting their own necklace to take home.

Throughout the week, activities were open in a "choose-your-own-adventure" style. Groups spent time getting to know each other by hiking in Glacier National Park, soaking in the tribally owned hot springs, exploring the lake and its Wild Horse Island, and shopping and dining locally around the reservation.

Nights were spent around the fire, and our final hours were spent on planning, team building, and strategy. The location truly stole the show. We thank our hosts on the Flathead Reservation and will forever cherish the memories we made and the laughs we shared.
