Not all oak cabinets are created equal, and the difference is in the grain.

Plain-sawn (often called “plain”) oak features large, dramatic cathedrals in the grain. It has a bold and traditional look that makes a strong statement. It’s especially popular in classic and traditional kitchens.

Standard oak (quarter sawn) has tighter, more frequent cathedrals than plain-sawn, creating a bit more movement while still maintaining that familiar character.

Rift white oak is where things shift into luxury territory. Instead of cathedrals, the grain reads as soft, linear texture. It’s clean, refined, and timeless. This also includes variations like rift-sawn and quarter-sawn white oak, which offers even more consistency and subtle patterning.

When choosing oak, it isn’t just about color. You also want to consider things like grain, movement, and the feeling you want your space to have. The right oak can completely change the tone of your kitchen.
