Julie Koehnen wrote the 8 part miniseries NORTHWOODS. Here it is playing out in real time.
PROTECT THE BOUNDARY WATERS! We learned this afternoon that HJ Resolution 140 may be voted on in the Senate as early as next week. This comes after its passage through the House of Representatives on January 21st.
This legislation paves the way for the administration to return leases to Twin Metals by removing the 20-year federal moratorium (PLO 7917) on mining in the Rainy River Watershed, directly upstream from the Boundary Waters. Using the Congressional Review Act to undo a public land order or withdrawal is unprecedented and has never been used in this manner.
National conservation organizations and outdoor industry leaders, representing both sides of the aisle, have publicly voiced their outrage and signed letters opposing this legislation. The fact of the matter is that if Congress can unravel protections for the most-visited Wilderness Area in the United States with a simple majority, despite massive public opposition, there’s nothing to stop them from overturning protections across the country.
THE FIGHT ISN’T OVER: Send a message now through the link below and let your Senators know that it's HANDS OFF the Boundary Waters, and to VOTE NO on this resolution in the Senate.
FLOOD THE LINES: Call your Senators now via the Congressional Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and tell them to VOTE NO on HJ Res. 140 or any similar Senate version.

Julie Koehnen
This week's series celebrates another long time alum of Adirondack Film, filmmaker Julie Koehnen!
In 2019, Koehnen won the bronze medal for her short film Master Servant and cemented her love for the Lake Placid Film Festival and all its staff. She has since appeared in the festival another two times with her films Awakening (2021) and Aperture (2024).
Koehnen's filmmaking career has been distinguished by critical recognition and substantial grant support. In 2020, she was curated by the Film Fatales for their "Women with Vision; Then and Now" showcase at the prestigious Walker Art Center, featuring her award-winning short film, Master Servant. This recognition led to significant funding from the National Endowment of the Arts, Minnesota State Arts Board, and Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. In addition to her filmmaking awards, Koehnen's writing has been recognized when she became a top 10 finalist in the competitive Stowe Story Lab fellowship for her pilot script Summit Avenue and was further validated as a top 10 finalist in the New York International Screenplay Awards.
Koehnen honed her technical skills during a successful editing career at the NFL Network in Los Angeles before making the bold decision in 2017 to pursue filmmaking and screenwriting full time. In December 2023, Koehnen earned her degree in Studies in Cinema and Media Culture from the University of Minnesota's College of Liberal Arts, positioning her as an emerging filmmaker who successfully bridges independent artistic vision with professional industry standards.
