The studio is a space of liberation.
In describing the underpinnings of her ground-breaking work, New York artist Torkwase Dyson talks about creating architectures of “spatial survival” as an act of resistance to the broader racialized and extractive culture. Direct pathways for self-determination and agency are possible within her envisioned structures.
This concept is central to the visionary impulse of PF Studios. The studios offer not only a physical space in which to make art and connect in community, but they also provide the conditions necessary for activating freedom and transformation.
In a city where whiteness and those with wealth dominate access and fill most spaces, creating a dedicated space for young BIPOC artists is a profound, revolutionary act.
-Shana Kaplow, an excerpt from “In Here Out There: 5 Years of PF Studios.”
