The duplex is designed to achieve Passive House certification through PHIUS, which is an energy efficiency focused program that sets a specific energy budget and is the most stringent energy standard in the country. The Carriage House unit will be designed to Zero Energy Ready Home Certification. Altogether, the buildings will have uncommon comfort control and much lower operational costs than typical new construction houses built only to minimum code. These energy saving features include: triple pane casement windows and thick exterior insulation, mini-split heat pump HVAC systems for heating and cooling paired with ERVs (energy recovery ventilator) to provide fresh air in inclement weather, and ceiling fans and operable windows for natural ventilation.
