On May 23rd, the Milwaukee Common Council passed a resolution standing with Salah Sarsour. Then on May 28th, the Milwaukee County Board voted 16 to 2 to pass Resolution 26-447, formally condemning his detention and demanding his immediate release from federal custody.

But what does a resolution actually mean and why does it matter if it’s not a law?

A resolution is an official statement that puts elected officials on the record. It cannot force the federal government to act, but that doesn’t make it powerless. It creates real public pressure. It signals to federal authorities that this community will not stay silent. It shows that Milwaukee, at both the city and county level, stands with Salah against unjust detention. And when 16 elected supervisors speak with one voice, officials at every level pay attention.

Resolutions matter because they reflect the will of the people. They are how local government says: we see what is happening, we oppose it, and we are putting that opposition into the public record for everyone to see.

Swipe through to understand exactly how this process works and what comes next in the fight for Salah’s release.

This is civic power. This is why representation matters. This is why we stay engaged.
The fight is not over. We continue to advocate through legal channels, community organizing, and holding elected officials accountable. Stay informed. Stay engaged.

This May, we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month across Wisconsin.

Muslim voices are AAPI voices. Some of the largest Muslim populations in the world are in Asia, from Indonesia and Bangladesh to Pakistan, India, and Malaysia. AAPI heritage and Muslim identity are not separate stories. They are intertwined, woven together across centuries and communities.

And that story lives right here in Wisconsin. Filipino and Bangladeshi. Afghan and Malaysian. Pakistani and Indonesian. Kashmiri and Vietnamese. We are AAPI. We are Muslim. We are Wisconsin.

This month we honor the richness and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, including the Muslims among them. From the masjid to the statehouse, AAPI Muslims have always been part of the fabric of this country, and they always will be.

We belong in the conversation. In history. In the future.

Happy AAPI Heritage Month from the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Foundation.

WMCF had an amazing time with MSA students at UW–Madison!

We talked about how to amplify your voice and broke down what local candidates actually do, from the Supreme Court to school boards, so students can better understand their impact.

We also put their knowledge to the test with a fun Kahoot (with some great prizes 👀AirPods, a projector, and a Bluetooth speaker)!

And of course, we wrapped it all up with a delicious meal from Dave’s Hot Chicken

Grateful for the energy, engagement, and passion from students ready to make a difference. This is how we build the next generation of Muslim civic leaders

WMCF’s First Civic Competition!

The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Foundation was proud to host our first civic competition with Salam School seniors.

Students engaged in civic learning, critical thinking, and friendly competition and the top three students won prizes including AirPods, a mini projector, and a Bluetooth speaker.

This is just the beginning. We look forward to bringing this civic competition to more schools across Wisconsin and continuing to empower Muslim youth to be informed, engaged, and confident leaders.
