#SophianUpdates Volume 10 Charles Ayres/Asian Studies Charles received his MA in Asian Studies from Sophia University in 2003. Reflecting on his time at Sophia, Charles credits the university’s professors with greatly expanding his critical thinking skills. Living in Japan for an extended period also cultivated his adaptability to diverse cultures—a skill he finds particularly valuable in a dynamic place like Miami, where Latin American and North American cultures intersect. During his years in Japan, Charles appeared on numerous Japanese TV and radio shows, including popular programs such as “Waratte ii Tomo!” Upon returning to the U.S., he continued his creative pursuits as a background actor in Hollywood while writing a series of books on the gig economy. His 2023 release, Meet Me in Miami, was featured by the Miami New Times, and his newest work, Who’s the Teacher?, a book for English language students, was released in November 2024.
