Without treatment, high cholesterol can let plaque collect inside your body’s blood vessels (atherosclerosis).⁣

Your provider will order a blood test to check the cholesterol levels in your blood. They can help you interpret your numbers and prescribe a treatment tailored to you.⁣

You may be able to just change your daily habits to improve your high cholesterol levels. If that’s not enough, you may need medication. People who need medicine to treat their high cholesterol usually take statins. These decrease how much bad cholesterol is circulating in your blood. Your provider may order a different type of medicine if you can’t take a statin or need another medicine in addition to a statin.⁣

Things you can do include:⁣

✅Be physically active⁣
✅Quit smoking⁣
✅Sleep at least seven hours each night⁣
✅Manage your stress level⁣
✅Eat heart-healthy foods⁣
✅Limit how much alcohol you drink⁣
✅Stay at a weight that’s healthy for you

Heart Surgeon, Dr. Jeremy London breaks down the 3 Deadliest Heart Problems Everyone Should Know About:

Bucket one: plumbing. This is ASCVD — atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Cholesterol plaque builds up inside the arteries that feed your heart, the pipes get narrow, blood flow drops. This is the number one cause of death on the planet. The gold standard for diagnosis remains cardiac cath, where dye is injected into the arteries showing the blockages.

Bucket two: structural. The valves inside your heart either get blocked or they leak. The most common one we end up fixing is aortic stenosis — the valve calcifies, stiffens, and won’t open. Diagnosis here is simple: a stethoscope picks up the murmur, an echocardiogram confirms it.

Bucket three: electrical. Your heart has its own wiring, and sometimes it misfires. The most common version is atrial fibrillation — AFib — where the top chambers quiver instead of beat. You feel it as a racing or irregular pulse. An EKG or a wearable monitor catches it.

There are hundreds of heart diseases. My goal isn’t to oversimplify — it’s to clarify. A diagnosis is still frightening. But understanding what you actually have, and educating yourself on it, only makes sense.
