🗞️[OBSERVER] NADA New York Opens with Plenty of Potential
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Miami-based Spinello Projects presented a sentimental, hyperrealistic sequence of narrative-driven paintings by Puerto Rican artist Esai Alfredo, isolating delicate moments of human connection and emotional exchange against the infinity of the night horizon. Expanding on his ongoing exploration of memory, belonging and q***r identity, these atmospheric paintings were inspired in part by the closing scene of Wicked, in which two protagonists reflect on the lasting impact of their bond before parting. The series is also a poetic revisitation of the artist’s own experience of migration between Puerto Rico and the United States, which was shaped by the rhythms of connection and farewell, distance and displacement, as that of an entire generation that grew up within today’s global mobility. By the evening, the gallery had sold more than half the booth [...]”

Expanding on his ongoing exploration of memory, belonging, and q***r identity, Alfredo’s latest body of work unfolds as a sequence of intimate, narrative-driven paintings that trace the emotional contours of friendship, love, and departure. UNREAL is an invitational survey exhibition featuring fourteen artists exploring these strange and anxious times through the guise of surrealism. One hundred years later, the core principles of surrealism still revolve around dreamlike narratives, symbolic iconography, distorted or abstract humor, illusionistic play of materials and mediums, and the stretching of rationality in pursuit of liberation. UNREAL takes a flexible, contemporaneous interpretation of these ideologies while keeping a wary eye on the complexities of the current socio-political, conceptual, and philosophical concerns taking place now.
