My Fridge

"magnetic men" is the work of Miami-based Venessa Monokian; small, hand-made critters crawling in a couple of lines across My Fridge. Close inspection reveals the true nature of the “men,” made of pencil top erasers and bent office staples. Currently Monokian is compelled to create a variety of work, motivated by her longing to understand how we learn and how we are taught, knowing that integration of the two does not always occur in real life. Her work is an investigation of academia, and of the educational environment. The point of departure is her own personal experience with academia, which has been less than fulfilling. As the investigation into this subject matter progresses Monokian has found that it has evolved from a personal critique of her own learning methods to an active inquiry into the schooling experience in America at the dawn of the 21st Century. Now on view through November 3, 2012. "Screencaps: Series 1" is a collection of screen-captures of conversations by Angelica Vergel that took place in 2011-2012 on Google Chat & Hangout™. This series touches on the writings of Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida in the age of digital culture. These screen-captures hold a personal essence that could only be experienced by those included in the conversations, therefore distant viewers will view the exhibition simply as Shift + Command + 4 imagery, while viewers who were engaged in these conversations (in the instance the artist and the curator) experience memories of and nostalgia for a particular time and place. Screencaps: Series 1 is the first in an ongoing series of works from New York-based artist and writer Angelica Vergel. Vergel is currently undergoing graduate studies in Media Theory and Media Studies at New School. Reception for the artist to be announced. Viewings by appointment only.
