UM Frost Jazz Hour features students and alumnus from the prestigious UM Frost School of Music. This week we are pleased to present the Juan Chaves Sextet.

Sextet members include: Nicolle Garcia, voice; Gabriel Herrera, trombone; Mauricio Silva, guitar; Ruben Espinosa, bass; Mateo Montes, drum; and Juan Chaves, trumpet.

Juan Chaves is a composer, conductor, and performer known for blending jazz, pop, and Latin American influences. Originally from Colombia and later based in Dallas, Juan’s music has reached audiences across the U.S. and internationally — including a performance at the 2014 Colombian presidential inauguration. He’s worked with major names in pop music like Charlie Puth, Cardi B, Nas, J Balvin, and Meghan Trainor, and he’s a two-time Downbeat Student Music Award winner, recognized for Best Latin Jazz Group and Best Original Composition for Small Ensemble.

Now based in Miami, Juan recently released his debut independent album, featuring a mix of original compositions and jazz covers, and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Jazz Composition at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where he also teaches musicianship. Juan believes musicianship training should feel less like a classroom and more like a jam session — and he brings that same spirit of collaboration and discovery to everything he does, on and off the bandstand.
