A new laboratory study suggests that a fatty acid found in marine oils from herring and mackerel may help reduce inflammation linked to psoriasis.

Researchers identified omega-11 (cetoleic acid) as a compound that reduced psoriasis-related inflammatory markers in skin cells grown in the lab. The strongest effects were seen in the early stages of inflammation, while omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) appeared more active later in the process.

Scientists note that a combination of omega-11 + omega-3 may have complementary effects in reducing inflammation pathways in skin cells.

According to FAOโ€™s SOFIA 2026 report, global fisheries and aquaculture production reached a record 235 million tonnes in 2024, highlighting the sectorโ€™s growing role in feeding the world and supporting more than 600 million livelihoods.

Aquaculture surpassed 100 million tonnes of aquatic animal production for the first time, now providing more than half of the world's aquatic animal supply. At the same time, the report emphasizes the need to address sustainability, climate change, and equitable access to aquatic foods, particularly in regions where consumption remains below the global average.

As demand for seafood continues to grow, building resilient, sustainable, and inclusive aquatic food systems is more important than ever.
