Short Story / Scene
The wind carried the scent of wet earth and old paper as the iron gates of Ravenswood Manor opened with a reluctant groan. Lantern light spilled across cracked stones; black rose bushes hunched like tired sentinels. On the far side of the lake a shape rose and watched — antlers tangled in moss, eyes like dying coals — but closer, in the graves, the true ceremony had begun.

A pipe-smoking Count adjusted his cuff as a woman in a dirt-streaked gown handed him a crooked pumpkin lantern. Children of the night — powdered cheeks hanging like dried leaves, hair torn and braided with roots — carved faces into gourds and placed them by the crypt mouths. Across the path, a pair of skeletal hands exchanged a silver pocket watch, its face still ticking an old, impossible time.
