The Pontiac GTO, often considered one of the first true muscle cars, debuted in 1964. Its creation is credited to Pontiac engineers John DeLorean, Bill Collins, and Russ Gee, who took the Pontiac Tempest and gave it a larger 389-cubic-inch V8 engine. The GTO name was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, and it stood for “Gran Turismo Omologato,” an Italian term referring to race-ready production cars.
One interesting historical fact is that the Pontiac GTO’s launch was something of a loophole: at the time, GM had a ban on racing and prohibited intermediate cars from having engines larger than 330 cubic inches. By making the GTO an optional package for the Tempest, Pontiac circumvented this rule, igniting the muscle car era and creating one of the most iconic cars of the 1960s.
