What a designer notices about a house built as a sounding board for the landscape.

House in Grândola by Bak Gordon Arquitectos sits in the Alentejo plains as a long ochre-toned volume built from lime mortar and cork. The southern wall runs alongside the pool, functioning (in the architect's words) as a resonance box for the surrounding landscape. Two fresco rooms bookend the composition, transitional spaces sheltered from the heat but open to the air. The interior patio anchors the plan. The bedrooms orbit it.

A house that speaks to Portugal's rural modernist tradition without becoming a period piece.

Named for the highest form of friendship.

Roda's PHILIA collection, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, takes its name from the ancient Greek word philia, the highest form of friendship and sincere affection, and translates the atmosphere of a luxury yacht onto the terrace or garden. The teak slat base echoes superyacht deck construction. Backrests and armrests adjust to the conversation. Cushions in fade- and moisture-resistant fabric handle the outdoors. Designed for the long, slow gatherings that give the collection its name.
