Awesome initiative!!
Big news! We are officially launching the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Restoration Hub, a collaborative team and platform of partners working together to research, restore, and conserve the services and value of Florida’s Coral Reef.
The “Restoration Hub” will be led by the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science with partners from Nova Southeastern University, Secore International, The Florida Aquarium, Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, and University of Miami - College of Engineering, bringing together world-class scientists at the forefront of coral research, reef restoration, coastal resilience, and community engagement. This first-of-its-kind collaboration will develop, test, and implement an arsenal of approaches to build ecosystem and community resilience through reef restoration, coral reproduction, disease mitigation, herbivore reintroduction, stress hardening, managed relocation, and wave modeling!
Over the course of this 3-year project, the Restoration Hub team will restore 125 acres of reef habitats in Miami-Dade and Broward counties by growing and planting >150,000 colonies of several threatened coral species, greatly enhancing coral cover, genetic diversity, and reef connectivity! The impact of this project will be broadened through direct community engagement via social media, public lecture series, museum exhibits, and hands-on citizen science opportunities. Please follow on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay updated and engaged as these are and responsibility to restore!
