Hurricane names weren't always so recognizable. Before the 1950s, storms were tracked by latitude and longitude, which caused plenty of confusion when multiple storms were active at once. Now, the World Meteorological Organization manages six rotating lists of alternating men's and women's names to keep things clear. If a storm causes enough damage, its name gets retired permanently — Katrina, Harvey, and Ian among them. Hurricane season runs June 1–November 30. Is your property ready?

Brooke Frost, Jessica Huwar and Derek Dibbens attended the 55th Annual Uniting Leaders Conference in Wichita in late May, connecting with Kansas school administrators who are key decision-makers for emergency response plans.
