Vayera - Day 406
Another Shabbat is approaching, and our brothers and sisters are entering day 406 of cruel captivity. Please do not let the world forget them.
This week’s parsha, Vayera, “And He Appeared,” opens with Avraham, age 99, sitting at the entrance of his tent, recovering from his brit milah. Despite his discomfort, he rushes to greet three visitors, exemplifying the value of hachnasat orchim (hospitality). Little does he know, these visitors are angels sent to deliver pivotal messages: the promise of a son to Avraham and Sarah in their old age, the impending destruction of S***m and Gomorrah, and the salvation of Lot.
Avraham’s plea for S***m demonstrates his unwavering commitment to justice and compassion. He argues with Hashem, seeking to save the city for the sake of even a few righteous individuals. This teaches us the importance of advocating for others, even when the odds seem insurmountable.
Later, we witness the ultimate test of faith: the Akeidah, the binding of Yitzchak. Avraham’s willingness to sacrifice his beloved son at Hashem’s command reflects unparalleled devotion and trust. Yet, this story also highlights Hashem’s mercy, as He spares Yitzchak and provides a ram in his place. This moment solidifies Avraham’s role as the father of our nation, demonstrating the balance between faith, obedience, and moral clarity.
Parshat Vayera reminds us of the dual responsibilities of standing firm in our faith and extending kindness and justice to others. In times of trial, we are called to trust Hashem’s plan, while also taking action to bring goodness and light to the world.
This Shabbat, as we read about Avraham’s courage and compassion, let us draw strength from his example. In these challenging times, may we remain united as one nation, supporting each other and standing firm in our faith, just as Avraham did. Together, we will prevail.
May Hashem protect and safely return our hostages
May He guide and shield the brave men and women of the IDF
May He watch over the State of Israel and the entire Jewish nation
Shabbat Shalom, Am Yisrael Chai!
