Our clearest look at the oldest layer of our upcoming permanent installation in The Dalles, OR comes from the 1910s, likely 1914-1915.

How did we date this historical photograph? To start, the Ford Model T in the foreground indicates this photo was taken sometime between 1908 and 1927. The streets of The Dalles were paved in 1910 & The Dalles Hotel - the balcony this photograph was taken from - was also built that same year. Construction on the Post Office (seen in uncropped photo) was completed in 1916. Owl ads were painted between 1880 and ~1916. Given all of that information we can guess this photograph would have been taken around 1914 or 1915.

It’s obviously helpful when photographs are dated, but when they aren’t, we love to deep dive into historical markers in order to contextualize these images into our timeline!

In crafting Pathways of Pursuit, we aimed to present a narrative within the experience that would give an equal balance between the complexities of the science and the emotion that resonates with every person whose life has been touched by cancer. We worked with the client to select three people as main characters for each of the three corridors - Curiosity, Connection, and Courage. We eventually referred to the corridors as ‘pathways,’ as each one shared our main character’s personal experiences and allowed guests to physically walk with them on their journey through cancer research, care, and treatment.
