Keloids are characterized by an overproduction of collagen during the skin’s healing process, resulting in raised, lumpy scars that can develop in areas experiencing multiple injuries or skin trauma. These scars can be particularly troublesome, as they may cause discomfort, including itching, due to the involvement of nerve endings in the affected tissue. From a cosmetic perspective, keloids can be prominent and may become visible through clothing, leading to additional concerns for those affected.

Despite various treatment options, keloids often exhibit a tendency to recur due to the resilient nature of the fibrous tissue they comprise. I am pleased to report that after three treatments on our keloid model, the keloids have not returned. The diligent efforts of my students have culminated in the successful achievement of a completely smooth skin surface. The final image, taken two years after treatment, showcases the lasting effects of our approach to managing keloid formation and highlights the potential for successful long-term outcomes in keloid treatment, as well as future treatments to reduce the discoloration left behind.
