Metuchen Auxiliary Police

Members of the Auxiliary Police were out assisting with traffic control this evening after a big storm hit the area causing power to many traffic lights to go out.
We know that this storm has made for a difficult evening for many residents, and we want to share the latest information.
According to PSE&G, approximately 1,400 customers in Metuchen are currently without power. We are actively working with PSE&G officials to bring additional crews into the Borough as quickly as possible. At the moment, there is at least one PSE&G crew in Metuchen, but with more than 60,000 outages statewide, utility resources are stretched across New Jersey.
The storm has also caused traffic signal outages at several major intersections, including:
• Main & Middlesex
• Main & Amboy
• Durham & Central
• Lake & New
• Lake & Amboy
• Lake & Middlesex
We are also responding to numerous downed trees and large branches on both public and private property, including reported tree incidents on Sharon, Mark, Hazelwood. Amboy, and New Durham, among others.
To support our response, we have called in additional police officers, Department of Public Works personnel, and members of our Police Auxiliary.
While we remain hopeful that power will be restored, we are also preparing in case some outages continue. In coordination with the Metuchen School District, we have opened the cafeterias at Metuchen High School and Edgar Middle School as cooling centers and places to charge devices on an as-needed basis. If you plan to use either of these facilities, please arrive by 1am and they will remain open as long as you may need them.
We understand how frustrating and disruptive this is, especially after an already dangerously hot day on this holiday weekend. We are continuing to advocate aggressively for additional PSE&G resources while our emergency personnel work throughout the Borough to keep everyone safe.
Thank you for your patience, and please continue to call 911 only for emergencies, check on your neighbors and stay safe.
