Ethical dog breeders are passionate about their breed. An ethical breeder will do all health testing required for that particular breed to ensure that a dam & sire will produce sound puppies without genetic health/structural issues. They will also adequately temperament test their dogs to ensure that they are not breeding dogs with genetic behavioral issues. Ethical breeders will often give a genetic health guarantee for certain periods of time because they know they did everything in their power to produce healthy puppies. They stand behind their dogs. Most importantly, an ethical breeder strives to better a breed while upholding the breed standard.

Β An ethical breeder:
🟒 Is transparent about results from genetic & health screenings of the parents. All breeding dogs have CHIC numbers.

🟒 Titles their dogs appropriately
🟒 Does not breed dogs until they are of age
🟒 Does not breed dogs that have health issues/ behavioral issues. Dogs who do not pass health testing are removed from the breeding program.

🟒 Will take the dog back at any time for any reason
🟒 Is a member in good standing with the official parent club for the breed & follows the parent club’s Code of Ethics
🟒 Does not breed designer dogs of any kind! Mixed breed dogs have no standard. How do you better a dog breed that has no standard to conform to?

There are a handful of other things that I could list that don't fit in the 2,200 character limit. What would you add to this list? 09/17/2025
