One of the most overlooked parts of an ASTM C1521 test happens after the test is over.

The destructive portion of ASTM C1521 intentionally cuts into the sealant joint, which means the standard requires the sealant installer to be available to repair the joint immediately after testing.

This isn’t just a best practice, it’s written into the standard.

If those repairs are forgotten or delayed, you’ve created an opening in the building’s weather seal that can allow water intrusion the next time it rains.

Another good practice? Have the installer document the process. While they’re on-site to make the repair, they can also capture photos and video of the test results and the completed repair for your project records.

Perform the test, document the results, make the repair. That’s the complete process. 👷‍♂️📸

Walking through the elongation portion of an ASTM C1521 test.

One important thing to remember is that this test isn’t measuring whether a sealant joint is good or bad, It’s evaluating how well the installed sealant is bonded to the substrate in that specific application. If the sealant does fail, the cause could be related to surface preparation, workmanship, joint design, substrate conditions, or material selection.

That’s why field verification matters. It gives project teams confidence that the installation, not just the product, is ready to perform as intended.
