Making Good on a Promise …
When RC was 19 years old, I had taken him in for a dental at the Equine Dental School. The student working on RC that day was a beautiful young vet from Switzerland. As she told me RC had very little tooth left and would likely not be able to eat regular forage within a few years, she told me about the great number of complete feeds I would have to be getting for him. I told her RC wasn’t allowed to “get old.” She again stated that horses did well on complete feeds even without teeth. Realizing she believed I was going to put RC down before I had to feed him extra, I was quick to assure her, “I will chew his food before I say goodbye to my dear RC.”
Fast forward eight years, and for want of a pocket knife, I used my teeth to cut up my dear ‘ol RC’s carrot. With fewer days ahead of him than behind, I have made good on my promise. Now to make good on my promise of an easy transfer to the other side.
