What does Merced sound like? How can we learn about its past and present through listening to the sounds that inhabit it? Merced County Courthouse Museum will open the “Soundscapes of Merced” exhibit on Thursday, May 14, at 5 p.m., in the Ground Floor Gallery. This exhibit, in collaboration with UC Merced, presents a collection of stories, oral histories, music and environmental sound recordings, photos, and other artifacts that evoke the resonant sonic life of Merced County. By focusing on personal experiences and memories of music and sound, the project foregrounds the rich cultural diversity and interconnectedness among the various communities that give shape and presence to Merced. During the exhibition reception at 6 p.m., Tou Long Xiongxaychou, Jesse Gonzales, and Pat Dahlstrom will use their performances to share their sound stories.
