Today is World Population Day, a reminder that access to safe, equitable healthcare is not a privilege. It is a right.
Globally, the populations most at risk are often those with the least power to demand accountability when care fails them: women facing maternal health complications, communities where language barriers go unaddressed, patients whose concerns are dismissed or deprioritized.
We see this in our own work. A language barrier that went unaccommodated. A mother left without answers after a delivery room tragedy. Patients in nursing homes who couldn't advocate for themselves.
A healthcare system that works for everyone requires more than good intentions. It requires accountability—at every level, for every patient.

Safe care starts with listening. When that does not happen, a patient’s health can be put at serious risk.
When patients or families raise concerns, they should be taken seriously, documented and addressed. A patient saying “something feels wrong” can be the first sign that a condition is worsening or that a critical detail has been missed.
