One of Alabama’s most stunning places during spring and summer…the Little River Canyon is a deep, rugged canyon carved by the Little River in northeast Alabama near Fort Payne. It is one of the deepest canyons east of the Mississippi River and sits inside Little River Canyon National Preserve, where the river flows along the top of Lookout Mountain before dropping into the canyon below. The river forms several beautiful waterfalls and clear swimming holes surrounded by tall canyon walls and forest. The best known is Little River Falls, a 45-foot waterfall that pours over a wide rock ledge into a deep pool below. You can see the falls from an easy roadside overlook or walk down to the rocks near the water at certain spots both above and below the falls. Several hiking trails in the preserve lead to other quiet swimming holes, smaller waterfalls, and scenic views along the river, making this one of the best outdoor places to explore in Alabama.
