Lock him up

A federal judge in Chicago has ordered U.S. Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino to appear in her courtroom next week to answer charges that he violated a restraining order limiting federal agents’ response to protests over immigration enforcement operations in Illinois.

On Thursday, a group of journalists, protesters, and clergy accused Bovino of violating a temporary restraining order issued by U.S. District Court Judge Sara Ellis proscribing the use of certain crowd-control tactics and upholding the right of media outlets to cover immigration enforcement actions. In their complaint, the plaintiffs cited video showing Bovino throwing at least one canister of tear gas during a confrontation between federal agents and protesters in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood. The CBS Confirmed team has verified the video.

Among other things, the Oct. 9 order in question prohibits federal agencies from using various types of riot control weapons, including tear gas, unless there is an immediate safety threat.
