Horizon Termite Control

Long weekend at home? Take 5 minutes for a quick termite check while you're around the house. Here's a simple walkthrough. 1. Tap on wood beams in your garage, basement, or crawl space. They should sound solid. 2. Walk the perimeter of your house. Look for pencil-thin mud tubes running up the foundation. 3. Check windowsills, corners, and baseboards for small piles of what looks like sawdust. That's frass. 4. Look near windows and light fixtures for tiny translucent discarded wings. 5. Check exterior wood (fences, decks, eaves) for darkened or blistered areas. The check is free. The peace of mind matters. If you spot anything, Horizon Termite Control offers free professional inspections across the Bay Area. Call 650-815-6661.

Have you found tiny translucent wings on your windowsill, near light fixtures, or scattered on the floor? That's one of the clearest signs of a recent termite swarm. Here's what's happening. When a termite colony reaches maturity, it produces winged reproductive termites called swarmers (or alates). On warm afternoons in spring and early summer, these swarmers fly out of the existing colony in large numbers looking to start new colonies. Once they find a suitable spot (often a damp wood structure), they land, shed their wings, pair up, and begin building. The piles of discarded wings you find are the evidence that a swarm happened in or near your home, and that a new colony may be starting. If you've seen these wings recently, time matters. It seems logical to stack firewood against the house for easy access, but it's one of the riskiest things you can do from a pest-control perspective. A woodpile provides food and shelter for termites, and placing it against your foundation is like building a covered bridge for them to march right into your home's structure. The best practice is to store firewood on a raised rack at least 20 feet from the house. It's a simple change that makes a huge difference. Where do you store your firewood?
